Breitling Navitimer 806 'AOPA'
Sixty years old, and still the most interesting watch in the room.
The Navitimer is one of the great chronographs — a pilot's instrument first, a watch second, and a piece of aviation history always. The 806 is the reference that established it: launched in 1954, adopted by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and worn in cockpits across the world throughout the 1950s and 60s. This example dates to 1968 and carries the AOPA wings logo on its all-black dial — an early variant that marks it as something genuinely significant. At 40mm, the proportions are exactly right. Larger would be wrong.
Inside sits the Venus 178, a hand-wound column wheel chronograph movement with a reputation that has only grown over the decades. Reliable, serviceable, and historically appropriate — this is not a watch that has been modernised away from what it was. The original hands have received a new lume. Everything else is as it left the factory, aged on its own terms.
The dial retains its warm original gloss, and the indices have aged in step with the handset — that coherence is exactly what you want in a vintage piece. The outer slide rule scale has turned a gentle green with time, adding to the charm rather than detracting from it. The edges of the dial show some wear, but it gives the watch character and presence that a pristine example simply cannot match. Look closely at the inner slide rule and you'll find one further detail: a box around the 10 marker — a variation so rare it has only been documented on examples made in 1968, quietly confirming exactly when this watch was born. This is a conversation starter in the truest sense — put it on a table and watch what happens. It comes without box or papers, as expected for a watch of this age.
Why we selected it
Desirable vintage Breitlings remain genuinely accessible, and the 806 AOPA sits at the top of that list. A piece with this much history, this much character, and this much wrist presence — at a price that still makes sense — is not something you see every day.
